Doctor Strange Is Dead: Marvel Comics Reveals New Sorcerer Supreme

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the ending of Marvel’s The Death of Doctor Strange!

Marvel’s The Death of Doctor Strange miniseries will end in January 2022, but the publisher is already revealing the fallout from this story and its impact on the Marvel Universe. There’s going to be a new Sorcerer Supreme, and his name is… Doctor Strange?

Doctor Strange’s death has already lived up to its name, with the titular hero meeting his end in issue #1. The series focused on the mystery behind this murder and how Strange’s death affects many other actors with supernatural power like Baron Mordo and Strange’s ex-wife, Clea. We now know that Clea herself will take on the role of her ex-husband in a new ongoing series starting in March 2022.

The new series will simply be called Strange. Death of Doctor Strange writer Jed MacKay will continue his ongoing story, exploring how Clea Strange is adjusting to her new role and her attempts to bring her ex-husband back to life. The series will be drawn by Marcelo Ferreira (The Death of Doctor Strange: Spider-Man).

“After the apocalyptic events of The Death of Doctor Strange, there is a new Sorcerer Supreme in residence at 177A Bleecker Street, and a new Doctor Strange – Clea Strange,” MacKay teased in Marvel’s press release. “And she’s got her work cut out for her – when she’s not fighting the magic gangsters of the Blasphemy Syndicate, or fighting the undead super-monsters, she’s going after what’s hers: the late Stephen Strange. Clea is of the Faltine, that race of warlords and conquerors, and like her parents Dormammu and Umar, she will not be thwarted in her desires, not even by the mysterious Harvestman who stands in her way.”

Interestingly, this shake-up comes just two months before the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Is this upheaval a hint that Clea could soon make her MCU debut?

Doctor Strange isn’t the only Marvel mantle to be passed on to a new hero in 2022. A mysterious new Asian hero will replace Danny Rand as Iron Fist in February, while the recently revived Venom passes on Eddie’s symbiote. Brock to his son Dylan.
